Oil Level?

Postby RetroEvolute » Mon Mar 05, 2007 11:59 pm

Hey guys, I've been around this forum every now and again randomly but never really posted. I drive a 1991 Toyota Previa All-Trac, Auto. Recently, the oil level light has turned on. I've since changed the oil and clicked that little stick in the dash to reset the oil change thingy. Well, That worked, but the oil Level indicator is still on.

I thought that it could be a fuse, but I swapped the fuse of the Oil Level for the fuse of another item of the same fuse type... No success... I've checked the oil a number of times, and it's right in the GOOD range.

Anyone know of anything that could be going on here? It's got 167,000 miles on it at this point, so I wouldn't really doubt it if the sensor has just broken somehow. But, perhaps there's something simple that I can do.

Also, it's also been smelling somewhat burn-ish lately after driving. I think it's just a screwy handbrake though... If you wanna see pictures of my Previa, go here:

Check the oil reservoir under the hood (on pass side). Has it got oil in it?

If the reservoir is full, the sensor in the oil pan or the pump is probably bad,but i'd just ignore it unless you don't change your oil regularly or it leaks quite a bit of oil

To my knowledge (which is limited in this area), the low oil level light on the dash comes on when the oil reservoir under the hood is low. If the oil level in that plastic reservoir is between the "LOW" and "FULL" lines, then that light should be off. If the level is fine, but the light stays on, then it's probably a bad sensor in the reservoir tank. Tim

Thanks a lot for the responses. I'll see if I can check out the sensor myself. 95-le, you said that you had an unplugged sensor... Where exactly do I need to check to see if I have that same problem?

And yeah... I've got oil in the passenger-side oil reserve under the hood... :-\

Guys, I just wanted to thank you for posting the above information. My van is leaking pretty bad and I suspect it is the pan or the fr seal. Distr o-ring and VC gaskets were done last year, so it isn't either of those I hope. I have not crawled underneath to look for the source, but if it does turn out to be the pan, the above info will be very helpful. Thanks!
